On Saturday, the Scottish Labor Party elected Anas Sarwar as its leader before parliamentary elections scheduled for next May, becoming the first Muslim to lead a political party in the country.

Sarwar continued with this step a family tradition, as his father Muhammad was the first Muslim member of parliament in the United Kingdom, and he also became a member of the Scottish Labor Party at the age of 16, according to the British network "BBC"

Sarwar will be the first non-white leader of a major political party in the United Kingdom. He has previously spoken out about the racism he faced as a Muslim politician, and he and his family have also faced death threats.

The Guardian newspaper reported that Sarwar beat his colleague Monica Lennon by 57.6% compared to 42.4%.

Sarwar, born to Pakistani Muslim parents, succeeds Scottish Member of Parliament for Glasgow (the largest city in Scotland) Richard Leonard, who resigned in January.

Sarwar, born in Glasgow in 1983, said in a video posted on Twitter, "It is a great honor for me in my life to become the leader of the Scottish Labor Party ... I will be a leader who focuses on what unites us as a country, not what divides us."

"I want to say directly to the people of Scotland ... I know Labor has to do a lot to get your confidence back."

The opposition Labor Party in Scotland holds 23 seats in the 129-seat parliament.

In 2010, Sarwar quit his job as a dentist and decided to enter politics.

During the period between 2011 and 2014, Sarwar was elected deputy leader of the Scottish Labor Party, and he played an active role in the campaign for the survival of Scotland in the United Kingdom during the period leading up to the independence referendum in 2014, when he was touring Scotland by bus with anti-independence activists.

In the referendum of 18 September 2014, voters rejected the independence of Scotland from the United Kingdom by 55.42%, compared to 44.58% who supported independence.

In 1997, Anas's father, Muhammad Sarwar, was elected to become the first Muslim Member of Parliament in the United Kingdom.
