Hanover (dpa / lni) - One year after the start of the corona pandemic, Lower Saxony is still in the most serious crisis since the end of the Second World War, according to Prime Minister Stephan Weil (SPD).

"The health, social, societal and economic damage in our country cannot yet be estimated," said Weil on Sunday, according to the State Chancellery.

"A lot of people, that is also obvious, are worn down after this long time and long for an end to the many restrictions."

The spread of mutants is currently causing concern.

The signs of hope were also becoming increasingly clear, said Weil.

The number of people who die as a result of the disease is falling, mainly due to the vaccinations in old people's and nursing homes.

At the next consultations between the Prime Minister and Chancellor Angel Merkel (CDU) on Wednesday, the aim is to create freedom and more security in equal measure.

"A difficult task that must succeed if the first Corona anniversary is to remain the last," said Weil.
