Leverkusen (dpa) - Bayer Leverkusen's sports director Rudi Völler is convinced of coach Peter Bosz despite the recent setbacks and, according to his own statement, does not think of an alternative.

“Peter Bosz is our plan B!” Said the 60-year-old in an interview with “Bild am Sonntag”.

Bosz (57) is still the same coach with whom the works club was top of the league table two months ago.

"Everyone was enthusiastic about his style of play and which we wanted exactly because he is a perfect match for Bayer 04."

The Dutchman is a "very honest person, almost too honest and too critical of himself," continued Völler.

“He knows the situation, doesn't talk nicely.

We appreciate that about him. "

In addition to the bitter end in the second round of the Europa League against Young Boys Bern and the failure in the round of 16 of the DFB Cup at the regional league club Rot-Weiss Essen, the Leverkusen team also deviated from the Champions League course in the Bundesliga.

Völler called the overall situation “naturally critical”.

"We're like a battered boxer, but we have to keep up with the Champions League places in the Bundesliga," said the 1990 World Champion. There is currently a lack of lightness.

"Bringing them back is one of the coach's main tasks."

The goal is still an international competition.

"If we missed Europe, it would have been a very bad year," admitted Völler.

Should that happen, the association would not run into difficulties economically.

"We only invested part of the sum we received from Chelsea for Kai Havertz," said Völler.

"That way we can get through a difficult year."
