Students in high school have taken great responsibility and had a very tough study time during the pandemic.

This is what Minister of Education Anna Ekström (S) says as guests of SVT's Agenda on Sunday evening.

She shares the Swedish Schools Inspectorate's view that it is the pupils who need school the most who are hardest hit by distance education.

- Those students should not be left alone, they should feel that they have the support of society, says Anna Ekström in the program.

"Must prioritize school"

Several large regions in Sweden have recommended distance education also for upper secondary school after the sports holiday to prevent an increased spread of covid-19.

But the Minister of Education opposes the image that this is being introduced due to sports holiday travel.

- My picture is that the regions do this because they have a very large spread of infection, she says and continues:

- It is completely obvious that the school is the last thing we close and the first thing we open.

If the choice is between having an open school and not advising against travel, then we must prioritize keeping the school open, she says.
