Auckland (dpa / lno) - The 36th match for the America's Cup sailing classic will not start on March 6th as planned.

The organizers of America's Cup Event Ltd.

(ACE) announced the postponement of the start off New Zealand's North Island on Sunday.

The New Zealand government had previously ordered a tightened seven-day lockdown for the “City of Sails” as a result of another corona case in southern Auckland.

ACE chairwoman Tina Symmans stated that “the staging of as many races as possible” will be sought and an exemption will be applied for.

"However, there will be no races before Wednesday, March 10," they say.

In the meantime, the organizers want to work closely with the authorities and create an updated schedule.

Cup defender New Zealand and challenger Italy face each other in the competition for the oldest sailing trophy in the world.

Because of the global pandemic, the America's Cup is experiencing a shift in races for the first time in its 170-year history.
