Erfurt (dpa) - The Thuringian Left has to reposition itself after the election of its previous state chief Susanne Hennig-Wellsow as federal chairman.

On Monday (March 1st) the Left State Executive Committee wants to discuss the consequences of the election.

A party spokesman said on Saturday that the question of Hennig Wellsow's successor is not the only focus.

It is also about the personnel development with a view to the upcoming state elections in September, in which the left has to defend its status as the strongest party.

Hennig-Wellsow, who has formed the new dual leadership of the Left with Janine Wissler since Saturday, had already announced in advance that she would withdraw from her Thuringian offices.

The state executive is to be re-elected in November, a state party congress is required for this.

The election of the 43-year-old as party leader is an expression of respect for their achievements and a positive signal from the federal party, explained the state association.

Hennig-Wellsow is one of the architects of the government alliance of the Left, SPD and Greens in Thuringia.
