Oberstdorf (dpa) - Karl Geiger gave the German ski jumpers the first medal at the home World Cup in Oberstdorf.

The 28-year-old local hero took silver from the normal hill on Saturday and only had to admit defeat to the new world champion Piotr Zyla from Poland.

Geiger jumped 103.5 and 102 meters on the Schattenberg.

Bronze went to Anze Lanisek from Slovenia.

On the third day of the World Cup, Geiger secured the first podium in the entire German Nordic team.

The female ski jumpers, cross-country skiers and Nordic combined athletes had not been able to look forward to a medal in eight decisions on the first three days.

As the second best German, Pius Paschke took eleventh place.

Markus Eisenbichler jumped to 17th place.
