Berlin (dpa) - According to the Federal Ministry of Health, the CSU politician Georg Nüßlein, who came under criticism in connection with corruption investigations, brokered an offer for corona protective equipment to the federal government.

At the request of the German Press Agency on Saturday, a ministry spokesman confirmed that Nüßlein had forwarded a company's sales offer to the Federal Ministry of Health in March 2020.

"The contract came about after an internal ministry review."

However, due to ongoing negotiations on quality issues, the contract has not yet been fully completed.

The ministry did not make any commission payments, the spokesman said.

The «Bild» newspaper had previously reported on it.

The 51-year-old Nüßlein is being investigated, among other things, because of the initial suspicion of bribery and bribery of mandate holders in connection with the purchase of corona respirators.

Nüßlein's lawyer announced on Friday that his client did not consider the allegations to be justified.

Nüßlein, however, leaves his position as deputy chairman of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group due to the investigation against him.

The Munich Public Prosecutor's Office had 13 objects searched in Germany and Liechtenstein on Thursday and seized evidence.

Federal Minister of Health Jens Spahn (CDU) had already stated that there were numerous references to mask offers from MPs, local politicians and citizens, especially in the initial phase of the corona pandemic.

Offers were also passed on to the ministry via Nüßlein.

The First Parliamentary Managing Director of the Greens in the Bundestag, Britta Haßelmann, called for clarification in the Nüßlein case: "The public and Parliament have a right to find out what is going on here."

In addition to the “long overdue statutory lobby register”, she called for stricter rules for MPs, for example with regard to the publication of additional income.

"We need transparency, traceability and disclosure of political interest representation."
