Dresden (dpa / sn) - For Equal Care Day, Saxony's Minister for Equal Opportunities, Katja Meier (Greens), calls for work in care and education to be upgraded.

"The current Covid-19 crisis situation illustrates once again the importance of care work and the need for a gender-equitable division of gainful and care work," said Meier with a view to the action day on Monday.

Surveys by the Federal Ministry of Family Affairs show that care work in Germany is still predominantly done by women.

An unequal distribution also means that women, especially mothers, could earn less income and pensions over the course of their lives.

The official anniversary of Equal Care Day is February 29th and this year it will take place on March 1st.

February 29th was selected for the day because it is only on the calendar every four years.

This is to symbolically show that women did four times more work than men.
