The President of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV), Thomas Haldenwang, recognizes an increasing radicalization in violence-oriented left-wing extremism.

"We are observing a trend towards left-wing extremist attacks that are very targeted and increasingly directed against individuals," said Haldenwang in WELT AM SONNTAG.

Spontaneous attacks from the demonstration are less common today than before.

Rather, “small groups that act clandestinely” and systematically commit serious acts of violence were increasingly formed.

"Here, the perpetrators accept serious physical injuries or the possible death of people approvingly."

Nationwide, there have been multiple targeted attacks on individuals by radical leftists in the past two years.

The perpetrators targeted lawyers, politicians and representatives of real estate companies.

Authorities in Germany register around 9,000 violent left-wing extremists.

At the end of 2020, the Federal Attorney General (GBA) had the alleged leader of a left-wing extremist group arrested in Leipzig.

The members are said to have spied out people from the radical right-wing spectrum and, in the case of targeted attacks, beat them to hospital.

At the same time, authorities repeatedly register paint and arson attacks on cranes, construction vehicles or the offices of members of parliament.

Haldenwang pointed out that the violence is currently "directed unrestrainedly against state power, but also against political opponents."

The BfV President warned of an increasing radicalization of the scene: "We have to keep an eye on whether this radicalization is developing into terrorist structures."
