February 27, 2021 It is the day of the funeral for Luca Attanasio, the ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo, killed last Monday.

The arrival of the coffin was greeted by applause at the entrance to the sports field in Limbiate, the town in the province of Monza and Brianza, where he grew up.

The pitch of the sports field and the stands are crowded, while respecting the distancing for anti-Covid regulations.

The Archbishop of Milan, Monsignor Mario Delpini, celebrates the funeral.

"The hardest words to find are those for the wife and daughters, and I believe the most significant word is that oasis of celebrating mass and asking the Lord to console the living and welcome in his glory the one who has gone away like this ", said the archbishop of Milan arriving at the sports field of Limbiate.

"I only met him fleetingly when he came to see me before my trip to Congo - recalled the archbishop - but above all I had the testimony of our missionaries, of the people I saw in Congo who felt in him an ally for all the works of solidarity for human promotion that characterize the presence of our Christian communities in general ".

The sports field of the town where Attanasio grew up and where his family lives filled up quickly to give Luca a last farewell after the state funeral on Thursday morning in Rome.

The ambassador will then be buried in the municipality that saw him grow up and to which he was deeply attached.

The controversy over the lack of an adequate escort does not subside and in an interview with the Corriere della Sera, the widow attacks the UN agency: she said she would take care of security but did not.
