Hanover (dpa / lni) - The unclear development of the coronavirus pandemic is still preventing many travelers from booking Easter holidays - many are braver when it comes to travel plans for the summer.

Many inquiries are currently being received on the North Sea coast, on the islands and in the Harz Mountains, but there are still no specific bookings for an Easter holiday, as a survey by the German Press Agency among the tourist marketing companies in Lower Saxony shows.

The hopes of the hospitality industry, on the other hand, are directed towards the summer.

After possible easing, individual holiday regions even expect a surge in demand.

An overview:

INSELN: "The bookings are still very cautious for the spring," said the managing director of the East Frisian Islands marketing organization, Göran Sell, on Borkum.

"There is still great uncertainty here as to whether it is even possible to travel."

Similar assessments can also be heard from other East Frisian Islands, according to a survey by the marketing company among the islands' spa administrations.

Borkum is expected to start gradually opening in May.

Other islands such as Juist, Norderney and Wangerooge are already preparing to open at Easter.

The hopes in island tourism are mainly on the summer.

Because after a possible opening, a "run" on accommodation could start.

Wangerooge, for example, is already reporting “very high demand” for the summer holidays.

From mid-July to mid-August, there is hardly anything left, according to the island's tourist office.

"During this period, the guests also have a high level of confidence in the opportunity to travel," said Sell, who is also the manager of the North Sea spa in Borkum.

COAST: Hotels, hostels and holiday home rental companies on the rest of the North Sea coast would be delighted to welcome guests again: "The demand for space, safe adventure and the holiday feeling on the North Sea coast of Lower Saxony continues unabated," said Jonas Hinrichs from the North Sea marketing company.

There are also numerous requests for accommodation for Easter.

With firm bookings, however, the guests are still cautious and wait and see.

"We expect that the wave of inquiries will increase in case of easing," said Hinrichs.

The bookings for the summer are good.

HARZ: The booking situation for Easter holidays in the Harz is also sluggish, as reported by the tourism association for Germany's highest low mountain range.

"The guests seem to be more optimistic from May," said spokeswoman Christin Wohlgemuth.

From then on, the Harz hosts registered significantly more firm bookings until the summer.

Above all, there are frequent inquiries about cancellation regulations and rebooking options.

It also shows that vacationers will probably have the next federal-state talks in view, where possible easing for tourism should be discussed, said Wohlgemuth.

YOUTH HOSTELS: The youth hostels in the northwest expect strong demand from families as soon as travel is possible again.

"We are well prepared for vacationers with an extensive hygiene concept and our experience from 2020," said spokeswoman Gesa Hauschild.

Whether or not the hostels open quickly depends on the core business of school trips, which will probably only start properly again in the second half of the year.

Individual locations, including those on the coast that are well-visited by individual guests, want to check whether they could open their doors earlier.
