Oberstdorf (dpa) - Cross-country skier Therese Johaug has defended her world title in skiathlon and outclassed the competition over 15 kilometers.

The 32-year-old Norwegian won in Oberstdorf with a lead of 30 seconds over the Swede Frida Karlsson.

Bronze went to Ebba Andersson from Sweden.

For Johaug, who became world champion three times in Seefeld two years ago, it was the eleventh World Cup gold in her career.

Even a small fall in the early stages of the race couldn't stop Johaug.

For the German cross-country skiers, the skiathlon at the home World Cup went badly.

Pia Fink took 19th place as the best.

Katharina Hennig, who did not get past 29th place, had no chance.

Team boss Peter Schlickenrieder said during the race on ARD that the wax had been “sold out”.

In the skiathlon, the athletes run half of the route in the classic technique, then switch skis and contest the second half in the skating technique.
