February 27, 2021Monsignor Mitja Leskovar, apostolic nuncio to Iraq, tested positive for Covid-19.

It is currently in quarantine.

This was confirmed by sources from the Baghad Nunciature.

He should have accompanied Pope Francis, as happens in all the international journeys of the Popes, in the stages of Bergoglio's visit to Iraq from 5 to 8 March.

The 51-year-old prelate, of Slovenian origin, archbishop and nuncio to Iraq since 1 May 2020, should not observe isolation in the premises of the Nunciature but has already been transferred to another location.

He has worked in the diplomatic service of the Holy See since 2001.

As for the staff of the Nunciature, they were all swab and are in solitary confinement.

The premises of the pontifical representation have been sanitized.

For next Tuesday, the Vatican has organized a meeting in which all the information regarding the trip that the Pontiff strongly wishes to make will be given in order not to disappoint the Iraqi people who in the past had already waited in vain for John Paul II's visit.

During the three days in Iraq, Pope Francis will visit Baghdad, Najaf, Ur, Erbil, Mosul and Qaraqosh, delivering four speeches, giving two homilies and an Angelus.
