They thought they were discreet.

On Wednesday, two fishermen were arrested in the middle of the night on their boat in the Gulf of Morbihan.

The two brothers, originally from the department, were picked up by four officers from Maritime Affairs and the French Biodiversity Office shortly after midnight.

On board their boat, the authorities discovered 220 kg of illegally caught clams.

According to the prefecture, the two poachers had harvested the mollusks "on a protected site in the town of Séné".

Three gendarmes from the territorial brigade of Theix, intervened in support, fined them for non-compliance with the curfew, said the gendarmerie.

Their boat was seized and the clams thrown back into the sea. "They are liable to a tort fine of up to 22,500 euros", according to the prefecture.

In the Gulf of Morbihan, it is forbidden to fish more than 100 clams per person, according to the regulations in force.
