Esslingen am Neckar (dpa / lsw) - The police arrested a woman and two men in Esslingen who allegedly wanted to bring several thousand euros to a senior citizen with the so-called grandchild trick.

An attentive bank employee prevented the fraud and called the police, the police said on Friday.

A 21-year-old had called an 83-year-old woman on Wednesday claiming that she was her granddaughter and needed money for an alleged rent payment.

The elderly woman finally agreed to help.

Shortly afterwards, according to the police, a 21-year-old man appeared at the woman's and accompanied her to the next bank branch.

"The bank employee there, however, became suspicious of the high amount of cash, reacted just right and immediately alerted the police," it said.

The police were able to arrest the young man in the bank.

Further investigations led the officers to the 21-year-old and a 23-year-old alleged accomplice, who could each be found in their homes.

The accused were said to have confessed and were released before their court date.

Whether the trio should have committed any other acts remains to be determined.
