Mainz / Wiesbaden (dpa) - A study in the Rhine-Main area is to find out how high the risk of a Covid 19 infection is with regular use of buses and trains.

To this end, more than 650 commuters who use the public transport of the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV) for at least 15 minutes a day will be examined there over the next five weeks.

The results of the study should be representative and thus transferable to Germany, as the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of Transport announced on Friday in Mainz.

The study is carried out by the Charité Research Organization in Berlin.

The results are said to be available in April.

"We urgently need more research on the risk of infection and transmission routes," said Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FDP).

According to the ministry, around five million people live in the area of the RMV.

Around 2.5 million of them travel by bus and train every working day.

You drive an average of eleven kilometers.

In times of home office and contact restrictions, however, significantly fewer people are currently traveling by bus and train than usual.

A few weeks ago, RMV spoke of a current occupancy rate of only 40 percent, while the North Hessian Transport Association (NVV) was only 25 to 35 percent.

It is also possible that many people do not drive out of fear of infection.
