Berlin (dpa) - Pop singer Alvaro Soler (30) gained his first musical experience in Japanese karaoke bars.

«I was very shy back then.

So it was convenient for me that the karaoke bars don't have a big stage there, but that you sing with your friends in small rooms that no one else can enter, ”Soler told the German press agency.

"We sang Japanese songs, but also English classics by Oasis or the Beatles."

The Barcelona-born musician (“La Cintura”, “Sofia”) lived in Tokyo as a teenager.

He now lives in Madrid and Berlin.

When he first appeared with his school band, he was still very nervous.

"Back then I didn't feel so comfortable on stage, I kept looking at the floor or at my bandmates."

The 30-year-old can be seen from Saturday (8:15 pm) as a coach on the Sat.1 music show “The Voice Kids”.

His colleagues Wincent Weiss (28), Stefanie Kloß (36), as well as Smudo (52) and Michi Beck (53) from the Fantastischen Vier are also there.
