Hamburg's school senator Ties Rabe (SPD) announced weeks ago that he would present a concept for the schooling after the start of the March holidays - and that happened at the last minute.

Shortly before the start of the holiday, Rabe presented how it should continue from March 15th.

There will be a new structure with a high proportion of attendance in the schools in the alternating model, which is based on security through quick tests.

This applies to around 60 percent of the students, the remaining 40 percent initially stay in distance learning.

Specifically, the primary school students and those attending final classes should come back to the schools in an alternating model.

This applies to grades 1 to 4 and at the district schools for grades 9, 10 and 13. At the gymnasiums for grade 6 - here it is decided whether to stay at the gymnasium - as well as for grades 10 and 12. Specification of the school authorities is that 50 percent of the lessons are given in schools, all subjects should be taken into account.

The schools, which were informed on Friday, should now work out the exact procedure adapted to the respective circumstances and see which change model is available.

Rabe hopes that in the clearly emptier classes, the distances can be kept better.

In addition, contact may only exist within one grade and medical protective masks must be worn.

Emergency care should also continue to be available if parents are unable to take care of the remaining distance learning on their own.

However, this option should only be used in an “extreme emergency” because the schools already have major organizational tasks to deal with with the new model.

The presence requirement is still lifted, so the parents can decide for themselves in consultation with their children whether the changeover model is used.

The project is also to be secured through the use of the now approved self-tests, which the State of Hamburg has ordered in large numbers.

Initially, the school employees should use it to test twice a week if more of the kits are available, including the pupils.

This would then be done under supervision, so that any positive test results then lead to the correct reaction, says Rabe.

If this possibility is sufficiently available and can also be implemented in the schools, it is then possible to bring the other grades to the schools.

Rabe also pointed out that money for ventilation devices and CO2 traffic lights would still be available to further increase safety.

Hamburgers should behave responsibly

The school senator called on the people of Hamburg to behave responsibly in the coming weeks in order to enable them to return to schools.

Because it is by no means certain that this model can be implemented in this way.

Rabe referred to the recent increase in the number of infections and the danger posed by the virus mutations.

That is why Hamburg does not want to take the step of bringing even more students to schools like other federal states.

A concrete incidence value, from which it would go in one direction or the other, had not been determined in consultation with Mayor Peter Tschentscher (SPD).

Rather, several factors should be taken into account, such as the severity of the illnesses and the location in the clinics.

Place of "social maturation"

"If we act wisely, we can go this way," said Rabe.

According to his calculation, only 20 of the past 38 school weeks were actually taught in schools.

"" That leaves deep traces in the development of the pupils. "After all, the school is not only a place for imparting knowledge, but also important for" social maturation ".
