Düsseldorf (dpa) - North Rhine-Westphalia Prime Minister Armin Laschet (CDU) has left it open whether there should be a public survey in September on a possible staging of the Olympic Games in the Rhine-Ruhr region in 3032.

That depends on several "external factors", said the CDU chief on Friday in Düsseldorf.

Another possible date is the NRW state election in May 2022.

Laschet had previously said that the initiative for the region to bid for the 2032 Olympics will continue.

The Executive of the International Olympic Committee decided on Wednesday to make Brisbane, Australia, the preferred candidate for hosting the Summer Games in eleven years.

This means that the German Rhine-Ruhr Initiative has little chance.
