- On the smaller lakes, the ice is quite good, but they can deteriorate quite quickly, says Henrik Elsehamn, emergency commander at the Sea Rescue Society.
The ice on Lake Vättern usually disappears faster.
An opening in the ice plus wind and sun means that the ice can become dangerous in just a few hours.
Can work on both ice and water
Just when lakes and streams have both ice and open water, it is difficult to use a boat for rescue operations.
The ice stops the boat, but the ice is not thick enough to go on.
That's when the hovercraft is needed.
As it floats on an air cushion, it can move freely on both ice and water.
- We are not dependent on the ice to carry.
If the ice cracks, we can still move forward, says Elsehamn.
In addition, it is easy to get close to the person in need.
- We can go very close to where a boat would have run aground.
