Portugal handball goalkeeper Alfredo Quintana, 32, died on Friday following a cardio-respiratory arrest in training on Monday, his club FC Porto announced.

"Alfredo Quintana passed away at noon today," the northern Portuguese club said in a statement, after being informed by the Sao Joao hospital where he had been admitted.

"The loss as hard as it is unexpected of the man, even more than that of the athlete, leaves FC Porto in mourning", added FC Porto, where Quintana has played since 2010.

The Portuguese goalkeeper suffered a cardio-respiratory arrest on Monday as he was preparing to start a training session.

Cuban by birth, he participated in the 2021 World Championship in Egypt in January, where Portugal finished in 10th place.

With his national team, he was to face France, Croatia and Tunisia from March 12 to 14 in Montpellier, during the Olympic qualifying tournament for the Tokyo Games.
