Friedrichshafen (dpa) - The number of fatal accidents on Lake Constance fell last year.

In 2020, 13 people lost their lives on Lake Constance or on the Upper Rhine - nine of them in swimming accidents, as the maritime and water police announced on Friday in Friedrichshafen.

The year before, officials recorded 17 deaths.

The number of accidents fell overall: 163 ship, bathing and diving accidents registered the emergency services, 35 fewer than in 2019. 35 men and women were injured.

The damage caused by all accidents amounted to more than 707,000 euros - the greater part was therefore accounted for by shipping accidents.

The number of sea rescues rose by 40 to 472.

At 244, a little more boats had to be salvaged.

The rescue workers attribute the increase to the fact that more people were vacationing inland in the Corona year and were therefore temporarily more busy on Lake Constance.
