Görlitz (dpa) - After the discovery of several dead water birds, the district office of Görlitz warned of the shore area of the Quitzdorf reservoir.

The area should be avoided "urgently", it said in a message from Friday evening.

"The background to this is the high number of avian influenza in wild bird populations in Germany that is currently detected."

Waterfowl found dead should not be touched, warned the district office.

At the same time, the food control and veterinary office was asked for information stating where it was found (mail: veterinaeramt@kreis-gr.de).

The infectious disease occurs mainly in water birds.

The highest incidence and death rates are observed in chickens and turkeys - in some cases up to 100 percent.

What is feared above all is the high economic damage that the virus can cause.

The pathogen is considered to be harmless to humans.

Avian influenza is a notifiable animal disease and is therefore controlled by the state.
