Frankfurt / Main (dpa / lhe) - He doesn't need a coffee or cigarette break and doesn't get back pain even after hours of cleaning: A cleaning robot supports the cleaning staff at Frankfurt Central Station as part of a test project that will continue until the end of April.

The vehicle of a Berlin start-up can sweep floor surfaces and neutralize viruses using ozonated water.

Ozonated water is a natural disinfectant and, according to the manufacturer, is also highly effective in combating coronaviruses and bacteria.

"Clean stations contribute significantly to the well-being of all travelers and guests," said station manager Leif Niklas Wulf.

The robot cleans and disinfects around 12,000 square meters of space a day and should support and relieve its human colleagues.

According to Deutsche Bahn, the robot has technology that is similar to that of autonomous vehicles.

According to the information, he drives around obstacles or stops the cleaning process briefly and continues as soon as the path is clear again.

Larger rubbish lying around, such as beverage cans, is also no problem, it said.

With the help of two laser and ten ultrasonic sensors, five cameras and two GPS antennas, the robot navigates independently through the underground area of Frankfurt Central Station.

However, he also has human supervision on the side during his work.

Even if conversations with the new colleague are likely to be one-sided, the employees have given the robot a name: In a vote, “Manni” prevailed with a large majority.
