Heilbronn (dpa) - Despite the worrying corona situation in the French border region Moselle, Federal Interior Minister Horst Seehofer (CSU) does not expect stricter controls as at the borders with the Czech Republic or the Austrian state of Tyrol.

Although there is a development with mutated viruses in the French region, which is not nice, said Seehofer on Friday in Heilbronn.

It is therefore also under discussion which measures should be taken on the French side and which in Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland.

"It's running at full speed."

The French wanted to decide on Monday, said Seehofer.

"In all of these considerations, border controls are not up for discussion until now."

The Moselle department borders the Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate.

In the past few weeks, the corona situation there had worsened.

The increased occurrence of dangerous corona variants is of particular concern.

France has already tightened its entry rules for this region in consultation with the German side.

Cross-border commuters who do not want to enter for professional reasons must submit a negative PCR test from March 1st.

Seehofer pointed out that the situation in the border area with France is very different from that on the borders with the Czech Republic and Austria.

The Czech Republic and Tyrol are mutation areas.

There, the federal states of Bavaria and Saxony had expressly asked for stationary border controls in order to ensure that commuters and goods traffic could continue to flow.
