Offenbach / Erfurt (dpa / th) - The coldest place in Germany was in Thuringia in winter 2020/21.

Mühlhausen-Görmar (Unstrut-Hainich district) cracked the cold record with a temperature of minus 26.7 degrees, as can be seen from the preliminary results for the months of December, January and February by the German Weather Service (DWD).

In a nationwide comparison, Thuringia was the second coldest federal state in winter with an average temperature of 0.8 degrees this winter.

So it was around 1.4 degrees too warm in Thuringia in winter 2020/21.

The comparative value calculated from the internationally valid reference period 1961 to 1990 is minus 0.6 degrees.

According to the DWD, the comparative value enables an assessment of long-term climate change.

With an average rainfall of 160 liters per square meter, the Free State was only slightly above the target of 159 liters.

The Thuringians were able to look forward to more hours of sunshine than usual in winter: the sun shone for 160 hours, the reference value is 148 according to the DWD.

For the tenth time in a row, the meteorologists recorded a too warm winter nationwide.

Accordingly, the average temperature in winter 2020/21 was 1.8 degrees and thus 1.6 degrees above the target value.
