Berlin (dpa) - In the opinion of its top bank supervisor, Raimund Röseler, the way in which the financial supervisory authority Bafin works was not designed to detect Wirecard fraud.

"The supervisory approach was not suitable to meet the risks," said Röseler on Friday in the Wirecard investigative committee of the Bundestag.

The Wirecard Bank was treated like other non-systemically important banks - and it was not seen that the bank was part of a “gigantic fraud construct”.

It is therefore essential “that we redesign our approach to supervision”.

The Bafin was responsible for the supervision of the Wirecard Bank, but had not seen itself responsible for the supervision of the whole group.

This was controversial between different authorities.

This is one of the reasons why Finance Minister Olaf Scholz (SPD) is now trying to reform the monitoring of such complex companies.

In future, the Bafin should be explicitly responsible for complex company structures.

In addition, the supervisory structure of the Bafin is to become more efficient.

Röseler made it clear that, despite negative press reports, there was no reason for greater surveillance of the Wirecard Bank.

A successful bank with a "considerable clientele" faced the articles.

In addition, the reports of the auditors EY were "perfect".

"We still don't know what exactly happened to this day," said Röseler.

Wirecard AG granted air bookings of 1.9 billion in June 2020 and then filed for bankruptcy.

According to investigations by the Munich public prosecutor's office, it could total more than three billion euros.

Because the accounting scandal remained undiscovered for years, the Bafin, among others, has come under fire.

The former Bafin boss Felix Hufeld took his hat.

In addition, the Bafin is targeted by the Frankfurt public prosecutor.
