Berlin (dpa / bb) - Germany's largest city is also the city with the most electric buses in local public transport.

This is the result of an analysis by the management consultancy PwC.

According to this, Berlin with 137 e-buses is ahead of Hamburg (55), Solingen (54) and Cologne (45).

Nationwide, the number of buses with alternative drives doubled last year.

But they are still relatively rare.

The number of vehicles with battery, hybrid, overhead line or fuel cell technology rose from 357 in the previous year to 676. Of these, 502 have a purely electric drive.

E-buses make up a good 1.4 percent of the fleet nationwide.

PwC expects that almost 1,000 battery buses will be added this year.

According to current plans, the local transport companies wanted to use more than 3000 more e-buses nationwide by 2025, it said.

The Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) are planning to convert their entire fleet to emission-free vehicles with electric drives by 2030.

It currently consists of a total of 1500 buses.

During the cold spell this month, some electric buses caused problems because the batteries were insufficient.
