US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken held telephone conversations with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, during which they agreed to find a political solution to the Syria crisis and extend the mandate to deliver aid, and the talks also covered the situation in Ethiopia and the Corona pandemic.

The US State Department spokesman said that Blinken and Guterres renewed their commitment to the political path in Syria under Security Council Resolution No. 2254 of 2015, which adopted the Geneva Communiqué and supported the Vienna statements on Syria, as the basic ground for achieving a political transition process aimed at ending the conflict in Syria.

The two parties also agreed, in the call, to extend the mandate to deliver aid across the border, and to alleviate the suffering of the Syrian people.

In a session on Syria on Tuesday, the Security Council failed to agree on a joint statement, as diplomats in the Council held Russia responsible for obstructing the negotiations that were held to reach the statement.

During the session, the UN envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, called on the international community to overcome its divisions to revive the stalled political process in Syria, after the failure of the last round of the Constitutional Committee, which was held at the end of last January in Geneva, while 5 European countries in the Council charged the Syrian regime Responsibility for this failure.

In another context, Blinken and Guterres affirmed their commitment to support efforts to respond to the crisis in the Ethiopian region of Tigray.

The talks between the two sides also dealt with the role of the international organization and international cooperation to confront the Corona pandemic and climate change, according to the statement of the US State Department spokesman.
