Hamburg (dpa / lno) - The youth hostels in Schleswig-Holstein experienced a significant decrease in guests and overnight stays during the corona pandemic in 2020.

Last year, 76,637 guests came to the 39 houses in the northernmost state, as announced on Thursday by the Nordmark regional association of the German Youth Hostel Association (DJH) based in Hamburg.

In 2020 there were 246 458 guests.

The number of overnight stays fell from a good 778,000 to just over 243,000.

The cancellation of school trips, which in normal years make up around 40 percent of the occupancy, had a particularly hard effect.

The managing director of the regional association, Stefan Wehrheim, announced that the youth hostels will again stand by the schools as a reliable partner as soon as the situation allows.

"After these challenging times, it will be more important than ever to promote the coexistence of class communities ...", said Wehrheim.

The youth hostels in Bad Oldesloe (Stormarn district), Schönberg (Plön district), Plön and Niebüll (North Friesland district) are currently used as vaccination centers.

In several other buildings there are special uses, for example as a quarantine station or for accommodating prospective officers.

The youth hostels in Büsum (Dithmarschen district) and Wittdün auf Amrum (Nordfriesland district) are being modernized with the help of special loans from the state and are due to reopen this spring.
