Hanover (dpa / lni) - While the corona vaccinations of the under 65-year-olds are picking up speed, numerous older people have to wait weeks for their injections.

Around 750,000 seniors between 70 and 79 years of age are affected in Lower Saxony.

Because the Astrazeneca vaccine is not recommended for their age group, their turn only after all those over 80 who are willing to vaccinate have been supplied with Biontech or Moderna.

"That will probably be the case at the beginning of April," said the head of the Corona crisis team, Heiger Scholz, on Thursday.

Scholz explained that the group with the highest vaccination priority comprised around 800,000 people.

The following vaccination group is estimated to include almost three million people.

In addition to the 70 to 79-year-olds, this included up to 800,000 previously ill people, 600,000 contact persons for those in need of care and pregnant women and up to 800,000 people who are entitled to vaccinate through their occupation.

In some regions, vaccinations for the under 65s with the highest priority have already been completed.

The first second priority vaccinations can begin there.

This applies initially to police officers, health care workers and workshops for the disabled.

How the elementary and special school teachers and educators are vaccinated will be finalized, said Scholz.

It is likely that they will be offered the vaccinations at the schools so that each individual does not have to make an appointment.
