Mainz (dpa / lrs) - The around 360,000 people from Rhineland-Palatinate between the ages of 70 and 79 can probably make appointments for the corona vaccination from mid-March.

First, however, the turn of around 110,000 over 80-year-olds registered in the vaccination pool, said Health Minister Sabine Bätzing-Lichtenthäler (SPD) on Thursday in Mainz.

In the 474 old people's and nursing homes in the country, the infection situation has eased significantly due to the "combination of vaccinations and tests".

"The number of infections has fallen rapidly."

But it is still too early to relax the visitor regulations - also with a view to the virus variants.

Currently, only 265 infected residents in 66 facilities can be assumed; before the vaccination started in December, 2000 residents were infected.

People over 80 should receive binding appointments by post for one of the 32 vaccination centers in the country by mid-March at the latest.

The first vaccinations for this group should be completed by April 3rd.

In the old people's and nursing homes, the second vaccinations should be completed this week - for around 80 percent of the residents.

A second round of the vaccination campaign for the other residents and employees will follow.

The nationwide pilot project for around 20,000 over 80-year-olds who are bedridden and immobile will also begin on Monday.

The around 58,000 employees of day care centers as well as elementary and special schools can make appointments in the vaccination centers from this Saturday on.

Doctors, dentists and employees in corona practices will be on the line from Monday.

Police officers and prison staff have been vaccinated since Thursday.
