Magdeburg (dpa / sa) - Almost two months after the start of vaccinations against the corona virus, Saxony-Anhalt has supplied 89,000 people.

A good 56 percent or 50,118 of them have already been vaccinated twice and have thus achieved the full protective effect, according to an overview by the Ministry of Health on Thursday.

The supply is particularly high among nursing home residents.

At the same time, a large part of the active ingredient supplied by Astrazeneca is still unused on the dump.

In the absence of sufficient study results in older people, it can currently only be used by people under 65 - and is intended to be used, among other things, for vaccinations by teachers and educators.

The district of Jerichower Land wants to start immunizing its educational staff on Friday.

The capacities allowed to care for up to 1000 vaccinated persons on Friday, said a spokeswoman.

For this, the teachers and educators do not have to book any appointments in advance, but can come in during the period that is planned for their community.

According to an overview by the Robert Koch Institute, initially only around a quarter of the 37 050 Astrazeneca vaccination doses delivered so far were used.

Nationwide, the share of deliveries already used was even lower at 16.5 percent.

In Hamburg, at least a third of the Astrazeneca doses have already been administered.

In Thuringia and Saxony, almost the entire Astrazeneca vaccine was still on the dump.

The overview relates to vaccinations up to and including Tuesday.

The “Mitteldeutsche Zeitung” (Thursday) had previously reported on the high stocks.

The newspaper reported that, among other things, appointments in the Saalekreis were canceled at short notice when those entitled to vaccinate learned that they should be vaccinated with Astrazeneca.

Health Minister Petra Grimm-Benne (SPD) last said at the state press conference that she did not understand the reservations about the preparation.

"I can only repeat: this is a good vaccine that has few side effects and is a good alternative," she said.

Three active ingredients are currently approved in Germany.

The fabrics from Biontech / Pfizer and Moderna can be used for all adults;

Astrazeneca's vaccine is currently only used in people under 65 due to a lack of study data in older people.

The federal government has determined the order in which individual groups should be vaccinated against the coronavirus.

The decisive factor is the personal risk of getting seriously ill with Covid-19.

Most recently, it was decided to give pedagogical staff at elementary and special needs schools and day-care centers preferential vaccine due to the school opening.

According to the latest information from the Ministry of Health, since the start of the vaccination campaign at the end of December, 86 percent of nursing home residents have received at least one vaccination, and more than half have already had the second appointment.

The care of the other groups in the highest priority is significantly lower: up to now, every second person in nursing homes and clinics has been vaccinated once and every third person entitled has been vaccinated twice.

Of those over 80 who do not live in nursing homes, 16 percent have the first vaccination and nine percent both have the necessary vaccinations.

In some circles, the care of those under 65 who are willing to vaccinate is already so advanced that the second priority group can get appointments for immunization with Astrazeneca.

This allows the Jerichower Land, for example, to offer teachers from elementary and special needs schools a vaccination offer on Friday - and thus before school starts on Monday.

To what extent other districts are already so far, the Ministry of Health and District Association could not initially say.
