Stuttgart (dpa) - From the point of view of the German Police Union (DPolG), parents of criminal children are far too often left alone.

The youth welfare offices did not have enough qualified staff, said the state chairman of the DPolG Baden-Württemberg, Ralf Kusterer, on Thursday.

Above all, there is a lack of experienced social workers who are up to the psychological challenges of working with delinquent children and adolescents.

Kusterer commented on the violent death of a 13-year-old in Sinsheim.

A suspect is a 14-year-old who was already known to the police because of an earlier knife attack.

Quite a few perpetrators had a bar of offenses on the kerbholz even before they reached the age of 14, said Kusterer.

Many of the facilities in which these young people found work on the laissez-faire principle, and strong structures would be much more effective, he said.

"In such cases, I am in favor of forced placement in a closed facility."

This serves not only for rehabilitation, but also to protect the general public.

"Should the laws not allow that, they would have to be adapted on this point."
