Wiesbaden / Hannover / Bremen (dpa) - In the Corona year 2020, significantly fewer people died in traffic in Lower Saxony.

A total of 373 people were killed on Lower Saxony's streets last year - 59 fewer than a year earlier, the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden announced on Thursday.

Only in Baden-Württemberg did the number of road deaths fall even more sharply, by 107 to 330. 2724 people died in accidents nationwide, 322 fatalities or 10.6 percent less than in 2019. In Bremen, on the other hand, the number of road deaths rose last year by 6 to 14.

In all of Germany, the number of road deaths reached the lowest level since the count began more than 60 years ago, according to the office.

This is mainly due to the fact that significantly fewer kilometers were covered on German roads in the corona pandemic in 2020 than a year earlier, the statisticians said.

The number of injuries in Lower Saxony also fell in 2020 compared to the previous year: The number of seriously injured people fell by 14.3 percent to 5249, while the number of slightly injured people fell by 16.9 to 29,733 people.

In Bremen, the number of seriously injured people fell by 0.8 percent to 362, while the number of slightly injured people fell by 20.6 percent to 2,762 people.

Nationwide, the number of people injured fell by 14.7 percent to around 328,000 compared to the previous year.

Overall, the police recorded around 2.3 million accidents in Germany in 2020, 15.8 percent fewer than a year earlier.
