Nantes (AP) - partial success for the handball players of the THW Kiel in the Champions League.

After the 27:35 home game defeat in the first leg, there was a contested 24:24 (9:12) remis for the German record champions at HBC Nantes in France on Thursday.

Steffen Weinhold scored four goals for THW, while Kiril Lazarov was successful five times for the French.

The "zebras" had traveled to western France without Sander Sagosen.

The Norwegian should be spared because of his foot injury.

"If you go into this madness when you are battered, it is dangerous", THW coach Filip Jicha said in the "Kieler Nachrichten" in view of a total of seven games in 13 days.

The Slovenian playmaker Miha Zarabec was also not available again after the corona quarantine.

Nevertheless, the Jicha team found good opportunities from the start.

However, the exploitation of opportunities left a lot to be desired.

Again and again the Danish HBC keeper Emil Nielsen parried the throws of the North Germans.

So the THW constantly ran after a tour of the hosts.

At the beginning of the second half, world handball player Niklas Landin moved into the Kiel goal for Dario Quenstedt.

Five minutes before the final whistle, THW was still 20:23 behind, thanks to Patrick Wiencek's goal, they made it 24:24 (58th).

But it wasn't enough for more.
