Wiesbaden / Schwerin (dpa / mv) - In the Corona year 2020, fewer people were injured and killed in traffic accidents in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania than a year earlier.

In 2020, 6059 people across the country died or were injured in traffic, as the Federal Statistical Office announced on Thursday in Wiesbaden, citing preliminary results.

This was 13.5 percent less than in 2019.

70 people died last year in traffic accidents in the northeast, 18 fewer than in 2019. According to the Interior Ministry, this number was a low.

The lowest number of road deaths in a year was 2017 with 79, the highest in 1991 with 624 at that time. According to the Federal Statistical Office, the number of slightly injured people in MV fell by 12.2 percent to 4831 last year, the percentage decrease in the Serious injuries was even higher at 17.9 percent to 1158.

Because of Corona, fewer people died in road traffic nationwide than ever since the statistics began.

Accordingly, 2724 people died in accidents on German roads in 2020.

That was 322 fatalities or 10.6 percent less than in 2019.

According to the office, the number of road deaths thus reached its lowest level since the count began more than 60 years ago.

“This is due in particular to the fact that, due to the corona pandemic, significantly fewer kilometers were driven on German roads in 2020 than in the previous year,” reported the statisticians.
