Berlin (dpa / lrs) - The federal government wants to redesign seven small and medium-sized train stations in Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland.

As the Federal Ministry of Transport announced on Thursday, the train stations in Alzey, Bingen (city), Pfalzel, Bad Münster am Stein, Saarburg (district of Trier-Saarburg), Monsheim and Bous (Saar) are to be converted to be barrier-free.

Among other things, the federal plan provides for the financing of ramps or elevators, as well as higher platforms and better information for travelers.

In the case of medium-sized stations, the federal states participate.

According to the ministry, the modernization of the reception building of the Rhineland-Palatinate railway stations Grünstadt and Neustadt (Weinstrasse) Hauptbahnhof is planned.

The aim is therefore to make the stay more pleasant, for example through redesigned waiting areas.

The federal government's «BahnhofskonzeptPlus» provides for the barrier-free conversion of a total of 111 stations and the modernization of a total of 40 reception buildings in Germany.

A station program for smaller measures was started as early as 2020 and is ongoing.

"Passengers want modern, clean and barrier-free stations," said Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer (CSU) on Thursday in Berlin.

There is a need for action, this is out of the question.

In addition to other planned measures, Scheuer spoke of total investments of more than five billion euros in more than 3,000 train stations.
