Stuttgart (dpa) - The corona pandemic has left deep marks on the balance sheets of Baden-Württemberg youth hostels.

School trips were forbidden, group trips were canceled, hostels were partly closed completely and for months or converted into emergency accommodation and ambulances.

The result: the number of overnight stays in the 47 youth hostels in the southwest fell by around 75 percent last year.

The German Youth Hostel Association announced on Thursday that there were only 284 712 overnight stays by 112 290 guests.

A year earlier, however, there had been more than 1.1 million overnight stays by almost 455,000 guests.

The decline in school classes is particularly painful.

Compared to the previous year, the numbers here fell by almost 93 percent, for the leisure groups it was 80 percent.

"On the other hand, many travelers decided to go on vacation in their own country," said DJH state chairwoman Susanne Pacher.

Families would have discovered the youth hostels in the Black Forest and on Lake Constance for themselves.

However, the prospects for the current year are not rosy, it said.

Because school trips in particular should not take place in the first half of the year and group stays and vacation trips would be restricted, there will be losses in the number of overnight stays and guests as well as in sales.
