Hamburg (dpa / lno) - The two Hamburg youth hostels experienced a difficult year in the corona pandemic.

After more than 67,500 guests in the previous year, in 2020 only just under 20,000 guests came to the “Auf dem Stintfang” and “Horner Rennbahn” houses.

The number of overnight stays has fallen from almost 168,000 to a good 53,000, said the Nordmark regional association of the German Youth Hostel Association (DJH) on Thursday.

The decline was particularly noticeable in school trips.

After almost 56,000 overnight stays in 2019, this area only came to just under 9,900 overnight stays last year.

The managing director of the regional association, Stefan Wehrheim, announced that the youth hostels will again stand by the schools as a reliable partner as soon as the situation allows.

"After these challenging times, it will be more important than ever to promote the coexistence of class communities ...", said Wehrheim.

Around 140 sailors from Kiribati and Tuvalu currently live in the “Horner Rennbahn” youth hostel, who are unable to return to their homeland due to the corona pandemic and who have been accommodated there by two shipping companies.

In the “Auf dem Stintfang” house, two associations have temporarily made it possible for around 45 women and men without an apartment to stay.

They should live there until March 7th.
