Wiesbaden / Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - The corona pandemic caused a record low in road deaths in North Rhine-Westphalia in 2020.

According to preliminary figures, 430 people died on NRW roads last year - 26 fewer than in the previous year.

The Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden reported on Thursday that this is the lowest level of traffic fatalities in North Rhine-Westphalia in the entire series of figures since 1980.

In 1980, 2885 people died in traffic in North Rhine-Westphalia.

According to traffic experts, the reasons for the numbers have been falling for a long time are, among other things, better safety equipment in cars, stricter alcohol limits and speed limits.

In 2020, the pandemic was added as a special effect, explained the statistics office: "This is mainly due to the fact that significantly fewer kilometers were driven on German roads in 2020 than in the previous year due to the corona pandemic," reported the statisticians.

The number of seriously injured people in NRW fell by a good tenth to 12,110 in 2020 compared to the previous year.

A total of 67,000 people had road accidents in the most populous federal state - 14.4 percent fewer than in the previous year.
