Cottbus (dpa / bb) - After the discovery of a World War II bomb in the city center of Cottbus, preparations are underway for the evacuations on Monday.

About 2,640 people who live and work in the restricted area with a radius of 300 meters have to leave it by 11 a.m. on Monday, as the city administration announced on Thursday.

You will be informed about the evacuation process at the house entrances.

The 50-kilo bomb is to be rendered harmless on Monday.

Also affected by the evacuation are the Technical Town Hall, the Spree-Galerie shopping center, the town hall, parts of the campus of the Brandenburg Technical University (BTU), a day care center, a primary school and an upper school center.

The bomb was discovered on Wednesday during construction work on Virchowstrasse.

Brandenburg is considered to be the federal state that has most of the areas still contaminated with wartime ordnance.

It is still unclear how the bomb will be rendered harmless.

The aim of the ordnance disposal service is to remove the detonator, as the city administration said.

However, the detonator is in poor condition.

Further measures will be decided on Monday on site.

According to the city, residents who have no alternative quarters can use the space in the sports hall of the Max-Steenbeck-Gymnasium.

The applicable hygiene and distance rules should be observed.

According to its own information, the city administration is currently still determining residents in the restricted area who are sick with Corona or are in quarantine due to contact.

You will be offered separate accommodation in the town house.

Sick people and those under quarantine could be cared for separately there.
