Since the military coup on February 1, thousands of Myanmarians have gone on strike and demonstrated daily to show their displeasure with the country's new government.

Thursday's protests in Myanmar's largest city, Yangon, ended in violence.

1,000 supporters of the military junta gathered in the central parts of the city - some armed with knives, stones and sticks.

Reuters reports that journalists and photographers have been subjected to threats, several people were beaten in the streets and a man was stabbed with a large knife outside a hotel.

The man's condition is currently unknown.

Another person is said to have been stabbed, video shows that Reuters has read.

- Today's events show who the real terrorists are, says activist Thin Zar Shun Lei Yi.

Must have used tear gas

Several media outlets also report that police have used tear gas against demonstrating crowds outside a government office in Yangon.

The military has not commented on the violence.

However, military chief Min Aung Hliang has previously said that police and military forces use as little force as possible against the protesters.

So far, three protesters and a police officer have been killed in the protests.

More than 700 people have been arrested.
