Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) is stopping the population of the European Union from any vaccinations that may be required for a long time.

Because of the mutations, it could be that “we always have to be able to vaccinate over long years,” said Merkel after the first day of the virtual EU summit.

In the EU, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary are currently particularly affected by the British mutation.

Merkel further explained that more corona tests could allow easing in Germany.

Literally she said: "We have to see whether we can create a buffer through more testing so that we can go higher than 35 for the incidence. But we first have to gain experience as to whether the buffer really works."

Merkel expects the EU states to have developed digital vaccination records within three months.

There was agreement among the 27 governments that this vaccination certificate for travel currently does not play a role in view of the low vaccination numbers, but one has to prepare.

Nevertheless, it will also be the case afterwards that the vaccination certificate alone does not determine who can travel.

Tests could also help.

Merkel refers to children who are currently unable to be vaccinated.

She currently excludes border controls with France.

"Border controls are not on the agenda at the moment," she said.
