Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan sacked the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces for what he described as an attempted military coup taking place in the country.

Pashinyan called on his supporters to take to the streets in response to this attempt.

The General Staff had called on Pashinyan and his government to resign immediately, to spare the country what it described as the repercussions of a political crisis.

This comes in conjunction with protest movements taking place in several cities in Armenia to demand the resignation of the government.

Al-Jazeera correspondent reported that demonstrators blocked several main streets and disrupted the movement of subway trains in the capital, Yerevan.

Pashinyan is facing protests and calls to resign after what his opponents described as a disastrous management of the 6-week bloody conflict between Azerbaijan and forces of Armenian descent in the Nagorno Karabakh region last year.
