The date 24 February is the birthday of the Finnish folklore researcher Carl-Axel Gottlund (1796-1875).

At the beginning of the 19th century, Gottlund made research expeditions to the Swedish Finnish forests to gather information about the forest Finns 'everyday life, language and traditions, and his birthday was therefore considered a good date for the Swedish Finns' national day.

In 2012, the Swedish Academy also decided that February 24 should be stated as Sweden Finns' Day in the Academy Manaca.

Since 2014, the Swedish Finns have had their own flag.
