Suhl / Sonneberg (dpa / th) - An institute has dedicated itself to hydrogen research, which was opened in Sonneberg in February.

The work with initially seven employees is also secured by funding from the Thuringian Ministry of Economic Affairs, said Institute Director Ulrich Palzer on Wednesday in Suhl.

A regional development association with the support of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK) Suhl campaigned for the establishment.

According to Palzer, the ministry has pledged three million euros for research projects over a period of three years.

Among other projects, he named a study on the potential of the regions in the triangle of Thuringia, Saxony and Bavaria for the use of hydrogen technologies, a study on the transport of hydrogen in existing pipeline systems or the development of sensors for measurements.

The use of hydrogen as a drive in rail transport, where the electrification of routes is too expensive, has great potential, in buses, in heavy goods traffic, in garbage trucks and road sweepers and in heat generation in industry.

South Thuringia's Chamber of Commerce President Peter Traut said that if CO2 emissions in Germany were to be significantly reduced, it would only be possible with alternative energy sources such as hydrogen.

The chamber assumes that this will also change job profiles.

In the coming year, an additional qualification for hydrogen technology will be offered to mechatronics engineers, among others.
