According to reports, Zakharova posted on social media, “The spokesperson of the US State Department said that Washington’s dislike of the North Stream 2 project is due to geopolitics and concerns about Russia’s expansion of its sphere of influence.”
Zakharova said that Germany has always claimed that this project is beneficial to Germany.
The United States has always emphasized that the economy and energy cannot be politicized.
She pointed out that the U.S. approach is "recognizing that the U.S. is undermining the basic principles of free trade and competition, subordinating market rules to its own geopolitical interests, disregarding the wishes of sovereign states, and harming the interests of citizens of independent countries."
"Beixi 2" is a pipeline project for Russia to bypass Ukraine and export natural gas to Germany via the Baltic Sea. It is jointly built by companies from Russia and Germany and other European countries.
After the pipeline is put into use, Russia's natural gas exports to Germany can be doubled.
However, some countries led by the United States expressed opposition to the project. The United States imposed sanctions on the project in December 2019, requiring companies involved in pipeline laying to stop construction.
