After the death of his previous doctor, who had contracted the coronavirus, Pope Francis, 84, appointed his new doctor on Wednesday, the Vatican announced in a press release.
Roberto Bernabei, 69, specializing in geriatrics and internal medicine, who works in particular at the Gemelli University Polyclinic in Rome (a hospital where John Paul II was treated several times), was chosen.

His previous personal doctor for five years, Fabrizio Soccorsi, died in January at the age of 78 “from complications due to Covid-19” while he was “hospitalized for a cancerous pathology”.
The Pope had attended his funeral in a church in Vatican City.
The leader of the 1.3 billion Catholics, who has been vaccinated against Covid-19, has no particular pathologies, apart from sciatica which regularly makes him suffer and has forced him in the past two months to cancel several celebrations.
At 21, in 1957, Argentinian Jorge Bergoglio had suffered from acute pleurisy and surgeons had to carry out partial removal of his right lung.
